Papal Blessings

A Papal Blessing is a hand-lettered parchment, bearing the Holy Father's image and signature of the Office of Papal Charities, granting the Apostolic Blessing to a person or couple on a special occasion: a wedding, a 25th, 50th or 60th anniversary, a milestone birthday, an ordination or religious profession, or a First Communion. It is a treasured gift for parents and grandparents.

1. Allow time

   Parchments are prepared in Rome and take two to three months to arrive, so request at least four months before the date.

2. Ask the parish for a letter

   The request must be accompanied by a letter from the pastor confirming the recipients are practising Catholics in good standing. Complete the form below or call the office; the letter is ready within a week.

3. Submit the request to Rome

   Requests are made through the Office of Papal Charities (Elemosineria Apostolica) website, where you choose the parchment design, upload the pastor's letter and pay the offering (roughly €25–€60 depending on size, plus shipping). The parchment is mailed to you directly. The office can submit the request on your behalf if you prefer.

Sacramental certificates

Every baptism, confirmation and marriage celebrated at St. Columba is recorded permanently in the parish registers, and notations are added when a person is later confirmed, married or ordained. Certificates are needed for marriage, to be a godparent or sponsor, for Catholic school registration and for ordination or religious life. Certificates are free; please allow five business days. If the sacrament took place at another parish, request it from that parish — we can help you find the address.

Letters of good standing

Godparents and Confirmation sponsors need a letter from their own parish confirming they are confirmed, practising Catholics who, if married, were married in the Church. If St. Columba is your parish, request the letter below; we ask that you be registered and known to us for at least six months. If you are new, come and introduce yourself to one of the priests after Mass first.

Questions

The name on my baptism record is spelled differently from my legal name.

Registers record the name given at baptism. Bring your birth certificate; we can add a notation and the certificate will show both.

Can I get a copy of my parents' or grandparents' records?

Records of living people are released only to them. Records of the deceased, and records more than 100 years old, may be released to family for genealogy at the pastor's discretion.

I was baptized in a country where the parish no longer exists.

A sworn statement by a parent or the godparent who was present can substitute; the priest will help you prepare it.
